How to Write Your Resume Objective

by Carlie Evie

Objective: To write a useful article that will help resume writers grab the attention of interviewers by using a compelling resume objective.

The objective is the first thing people will see when they read your resume. It has to be positive, concise, and it needs to grab your reader's attention.

It needs to be tailored to each position you're applying for. This is an opportunity to show that you're a perfect fit for the job. To write that perfect objective, here are some tips:

Do your best to keep the objective neutral. State what kind of job you're looking for. Do not state your desire, but what you can do for the company.

So instead of writing something like, "A position where I can grow and use my skills" (etc), focus on the job itself. Say something more to the effect of, "An administrative assistance position in a fast-paced office environment." Keep the focus in the objective on the company and position. Keep this in mind: What would the manager want in a new employee?

One title per resume! Don't write a laundry list of all the things you're willing to do. Use the resume objective to answer specifically the question, "What job do you want?"

You want the objective to be short, no longer than a sentence. Two may be fine if they're both short and to the point, but a long objective will not capture the attention of your potential employer.

Avoid stating the obvious. Everyone wants opportunities for advancement, so there is no need to tell them so and start angling for your next job before you've even gotten this one! In your objective, don't tell them that you're responsible and hard-working; that ought to be redundant. Let all your experience and skills do the talking here!

If you keep these tips in mind and write your resume objective from the employer's point of view, you will be one step closer to the perfect job!
